Terrifying movies of your childhood

There are many and I could name off the top of my head a few, but I’m gonna throw in ‘The last unicorn’ at first. The red bull just freaked me out and that whole idea of all of a beautiful species becoming extinct deeply unsettled me as a very young child.
I just found out that Christopher Lee and Jeff Bridges were voice acting, real cool.

What freaked you out as little ones?

  • [**The Witches**](https://trakt.tv/movies/the-witches-1990) for when they take of their faces and reveal the old witchey faces below!

then it would be accidentally seeing the motorcycle death in [**A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child**](https://trakt.tv/movies/a-nightmare-on-elm-street-5-the-dream-child-1989)

  • 1978 Invasion Of The Body Snatchers.

That ending still haunts my nightmares.

  • Return to Oz!! That was barely a children’s film. Those Wheeler things were so scary haha.

  • The woman getting turned into a robot in Superman III

  • i remember i got really freaked out watching brain dead (dead alive) especially at that dinner scene where the mother eats her ear

  • The Terminator. Inexorable cyborg juggernauts and nuclear war. Thanks dad.

  • [The Dark Crystal](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQ5_0CEXrf0). I had just turned 2 years old when this movie released on VHS. The Skeksis terrified me when I first saw it.

  • The live action Scooby Doo scared me as a kid. The ghost in the opening scene was pretty scary and the CGI dog creatures were scary in their day.

  • I watched Romper Stomper when I was 7 years old. gave me a few nightmares.

  • I don’t remember why and it’s probably not anywhere near as freaky now but I remember “The Lawnmower Man” scaring the fuck out of me.

  • Wallace and Gromit scared everything out of me when I was younger. That and rise of the planets of the apes.

  • Edward Scissorhands scared the shit out of me.

Pale, weird looking guy with a scarred face and **knives for hands!** That was enough to haunt me for years.

  • Poltergeist. My god that movie terrified me as a child. [This scene specifically](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdUkPu_rXo0) scarred me and is definitely responsible for my childhood fear of clowns and beds. In typical big brother fashion my brother abused this fear and one day when I was going upstairs to go to sleep he staged being pulled under his bed by the clown. I am pretty sure this was the reason I slept pretty much anywhere but my bed as a kid.

  • I saw Yellow Submarine when I was 4. I had nightmares through the rest of my childhood. The blue meanies freaked me the fuck out. I had dreams that I was being chased by giant hands with mouths and giants in top hats dropping giant apples on me. The imagery throughout the movie is creepy and twisted.

  • Leprechaun. I watched it again recently and it was stupid funny but I still had the lingering fear. haha

  • Two movies that my parents let me watch much earlier than I should have.
The Devil’s Advocate and The Sphere.
The scene from The Sphere where Queen Latifah dies via jellyfish really fucked me up as a then 9 year-old child. Also Charlize’s wrist slitting scene was also a bit much for me at that age as well.

  • Though this isn’t a scary movie, I saw the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie when I was 6 (my older cousins went to go see it in theaters and I wanted to join) and the skeletons gave me nightmares for weeks.

  • Ernest Scared Stupid

For an Ernest movie, it was pretty terrifying.

  • I forget what it was called, but the Disney movie about a phantom in the movie theater horrified me when I was like 5 years old.

  • Terrifying movie as a child was The Wizard of Oz. The twister scene scared the hell out of me, as well as the Wicked Witch and the Flying monkeys… I was scared of death of tornadoes until I saw the movie Twister, with Bill Pullman and Helen Hunt. I loved that movie! I’m 35 now and I love The Wizard of Oz. One of my favorite movies!

  • This one’s a little weird, but The Abyss. Not the aliens or the water tentacle with a face or anything – that bit was fine. But there’s a scene where a bearded dude is trapped on the wrong side of a flooding room, and he’s pounding on the door, drowning, and that shit freaked me out way more than any horror movie I’d seen yet. And I was the kid who hid behind the couch when a zombie movie was on.

  • Definitely that scene in the Witches. As a kid that haunted me every single day!

  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

    Pinocchio.

I actually still get some shivers from Pinocchio, but Snow White has fallen flat for me now. But back then they were the stuff of nightmares.

  • For some reason I was absolutely horrified of Volcano with Tommie Lee Jones. I developed a really big fear of volcanoes growing up because of this.

  • I’ve been watching horror/sci-fi movies since I was 5. I’ve always loved them, but they generally don’t scare me. But *The Creeping Unknown* (*The Quatermass Experiment* in the UK) for some reason absolutely freaked me out when I was 10.
