  • there are many ways to look at this, but in reality there are many flavors of engineers and only a few of the specialties need to code.

  • Low quality in some cases and surplus overall.

    Still, it can’t hurt to have a population of people pretty well trained in technology and science. Those less capable or not getting into an engineering job for other reasons will still bring their developed analytical skills into their future.

    I trained in engineering 35 yester ago and they told us then that after 2 years happy those among us would be not in direct engineering. I’ve think they expected us to be in marketing, sales, and leadership roles along with sideways steps into other professions.

  • Most engineers in the world only learn half of engineering.

    In the US, Canada, and probably Europe, there is a large aspect of projects, project design. Presentation, technical reports, Soft skills, etc. as well.
