  • Campus closed because someone called in a mass shooting threat. It did not close in response to the campus protests.

  • Conservatives have been trying to close it since it opened in the 60s. I don’t think it’s going anywhere.

  • Paywalled…

  • First things first. The leadership of the university has to go. Not because of what they “did”, but what they have failed to do. Namely, to handle the situation. In business, no executive would let a manager blame his staff for the failure of a department. It’s that managers job to manage staff and run their department. If they can’t run their department, you need a new manager. Instead we have a professor who appears on Fox News and a Dean who answered “that depends what you mean by the term”, when asked “are you a white supremacist?” (Televised interview on Vice news, HBO). Regardless of what the issues are, it’s clear that the crisis has been mismanaged and the leadership should step down, which also brings me to my next point.

Regardless of how you may feel about ANY students at Evergreen, in four years they will be gone. No matter how “bad” the student population is, they are temporary. The educators at Evergreen and the people of our community should do everything we can to preserve our University. If not for the students of today, then the students of tomorrow. Even those of us without children will benefit from an educated populace. Eradication of a state university will SLAM the door of opportunity in the face of THOUSANDS of young Washingtonians. That is bad for our future. No amount of culture war propaganda can erase that.

There is nothing new about the “kids today, I tell ‘ya” mentality. Look at ‘man on the street’ interviews from the 60’s and you’ll hear the same statements made about college students. But the thought of closing a University is ANYTHING but progressive. It’s cutting off your nose to spite your face!
